The Ugandan government has kicked off investigations into the degree of Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja, which he claims to have been awarded by Team University in Uganda.
This comes after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) wrote to Uganda’s Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni, requesting their government to investigate the authenticity of Sakaja’s academic qualifications.
According to a Ugandan daily, New Vision, the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE) said that they shall reveal their findings upon completing the investigations.
“Let us finalize our investigations and everyone will know. We cannot share anything now until the investigations are complete,” said NHCE Executive director Prof Mary Okweakol, adding that they are at an advanced stage in the probe.
New Vision further indicated that a former student from Team University denied Sakaja’s graduation with the class of 2016, noting that only six students graduated and the Senator was not among them.
“We didn’t have online studies at the time and when we graduated in October 21,2016, we were only six students. I know them because we are classmates,” noted the student.
Sakaja had claimed that he graduated from the aforesaid University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Management.
Team University, according to the report, has not yet responded to queries on the case.
The Commission for University Education’s (CUE) had earlier revoked the recognition of Sakaja’s degree vowing that it will open a probe into the validity of the papers Sakaja presented before the IEBC for clearance to run.
However, the High Court suspended the revocation and also prohibited the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from striking Sakaja from its list of candidates cleared to run for the Nairobi Governor’s seat.
