Police shot and killed a suspect in a robbery with violence while attempting to steal from a university student in Thika, Kiambu County.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Thika Technical Institute student was walking to his rented apartment on Wednesday night when he was approached by three armed criminals who began ransacking his pockets at Gatitu intersection.

“Following the unexpected attack, the victim only identified as Onyi screamed in despair, Wuuuui! Wuuuui!” Wezi! Nisaidieni! “A young man was subdued on the ground by three machete wielding bandits, triggering a fast response from law enforcement officers,” stated the DCI in a statement on Thursday.

“The officers immediately interfered by ordering the three to halt, but their warnings went unheeded as one of the criminals reached for his privates and attempted to draw a handgun. However, before his hand could leave the ‘armoury,’ a single shot was fired, immobilizing him and sending him crashing on the ground.”

When one of their accomplices was shot, the two remaining suspects abandoned their getaway motorcycle and escaped on foot.

Officers rescued the student and brought him home, while the suspect’s body was taken to the General Kago hospital mortuary pending identification.

The suspects’ blue motorbike, registration number KMDS 602K, was impounded and is now being held at Thika police station as operations to apprehend the remaining suspects continue.
