At the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the owner of the building that collapsed and killed two people at Ruaka in Kiambu County last week was detained as he tried to flee the country.
Kiambu County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha stated that the owner of the Ruaka building is presently being held at a Kiambu police station while awaiting transport to court while speaking at the scene of another building that collapsed on Monday morning in Ruiru town.
According to Nkanatha, charges of causing deaths and damage to other people’s properties may be brought against the property owner as well as other parties involved, such as county authorities and engineers.
People died in Kirigiti and Ruaka, so there were both casualties and property damage, the commissioner added. “There are so many things that we are looking at.”
Since there have been further instances of collapsing buildings, Kiambu County has been on the scene. The most recent collapse occurred on Monday at 4 a.m., hours after more than 100 occupants had been evacuated.
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi oversaw the evacuation efforts on Sunday night after discovering severe breaches in the five-story structure next to Ruiru Police Station.
An emergency evacuation was required as a result of the building being condemned and designated as unfit for habitation.
A multi-agency team has been formed, according to Commissioner Nkanatha, including personnel from the national and county governments, and it will proceed throughout the entire county to assess the condition of the buildings in order to stop similar occurrences in the future.
He blamed the judiciary, though, for issuing anticipatory bonds to people detained in connection with collapsed structures.
We respect the independence of our judiciary, but we need their assistance to combat impunity since we are all working for the same group of people, Nkanatha remarked.
Today, the collapsed building in Ruiru town will be demolished.
