The 2022 Presidential Debate Set For Tuesday July 26

The 2022 Presidential Debate will be held on Tuesday, July 26, the head of the debates’ Secretariat, Clifford Machoka, has announced.

Machoka, in a statement on Monday, noted that the presidential debates shall come a week after the Deputy Presidential Debates which will be held on Tuesday, July 19.

He added that this year, the secretariat shall also oversee a Gubernatorial debate which shall take place on Monday, July 11.

“This is in recognition of the central place held by devolution in our governance and the growing need to ensure greater accountability at the county level,” wrote Machoka.

The Gubernatorial Debate shall proceed in two tiers, according to the statement;

The first entailing candidates whose popularity ratings stand below 5% while the second will entail those whose popularity is above 5%.

Machoka further divulged that the first tier shall be moderated by Serfine Achieng’ Ouma of KBC and Ayub Abdikadir of K24.

The second tier shall be moderated by Zubeida Koome of KTN and Mark Masai of NTV.  Waihiga Mwaura of Citizen TV will moderate both debates.

The moderators, according to Machoka, have been tasked to select the questions to be asked and should not share them with the candidates. They have been ordered to not meet any candidates or even their campaign teams.

All debates shall be held at the Catholic University for Eastern Africa (CUEA) main campus situated in Karen, Nairobi, from 5:00pm to 10:00pm.
