
“Today, the East Africa Community (EAC) will formally commence the Verification Mission to determine whether the Federal Republic of Somalia is prepared to join the EAC. The Jumuiya posted on social media, “The verification team in Mogadishu comprises of Senior Officials from all EAC Partner States.
Mogadishu applied to join the community for a second time in 2019, but the Community never dispatched a team of experts to the nation to assess its eligibility. There were a number of challenges that EAC need Mogadishu to support. The process to join the Community reportedly takes at least two years.
Somalia submitted a new application and expressed interest in joining the EAC after the Democratic Republic of the Congo was admitted to the Community.
“Somalia belongs to East Africa,” President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud remarked in an earlier speech at the EAC heads of State summit. Somalia is connected to each of the other six nations present either by commerce, ties to the local community, or other connections.
