Police in Samburu County last weekend confiscated 73.6 kilograms of bhang valued at Ksh.2,576,000 and arrested five persons believed to have been ferrying the drugs to Nairobi.
Following a routine stop by police at Sabache area along the Moyale-Isiolo highway, a narcotics sniffer dog found the bhang stashed in a hidden compartment beneath the rear seats of a land cruiser the suspects were travelling in.
The bhang was wrapped in khaki papers enclosed by tape.
“The driver of the vehicle, who was acting suspiciously was ordered to stop and alight, to facilitate a proper search,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said in a statement.
“Upon a detailed check of the vehicle conducted by a narcotic sniffer dog from the K-9 Eastern command, 41 stones of marijuana were recovered. Intelligence leads indicate that the traffickers procure the drug from associates in a neighboring country.”
The DCI reiterated that growing, selling and consuming marijuana remains illegal and persons found in possession of the controlled substance will be prosecuted.
