On Tuesday, President William Ruto participated in a high-level consultative conference on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with counterparts from Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
According to President Ruto, the meeting’s main goal was to find ways for the participating countries to coordinate their strategies and work with Angola to maintain peace in the DRC.
Dr. Ruto claims that the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s ongoing insecurity prevents the area from engaging in economic activity and prospering.
General Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Samia Suluhu of Tanzania, and Lukonde Sama of the Democratic Republic of the Congo all attended the meeting.
Only a few days had passed since Kenya declared a military deployment to the unstable Eastern DRC region before the summit in Sharma El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Hundreds of armed organizations can be found in the eastern DRC, many of them were created as a result of the full-fledged hostilities that erupted in the 1990s.
Recent territorial gains by the M23 rebel group, which Kinshasa accuses Rwanda of assisting, have increased regional tensions.
A regional military force led by Kenya will be established by the seven-nation East African Community in June to bring peace to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Uganda, and the DRC itself are all members of the EAC.
According to the UN, 12,000 of the 50,000 persons who have been displaced by fighting between the Congolese Armed Forces and the M23 have sought asylum in Uganda.
