A fifty-year-old man was given a life sentence in prison by a Narok court after pleading guilty to defiling and marrying a ten-year-old girl.
Saigulu Ololosereka was accused with defiling a 10-year-old child and illegally marrying her in 2019. He appeared before Narok Senior Resident Magistrate Phyllis Shinyanda.
After pleading guilty to the charges, Ms. Shinyanda wrote in her decision that the man had been warned of the seriousness of the situation. Nevertheless, he insisted that he had married the girl because her parents had given her to him for marriage.
Shinyanda proceeded by claiming that the victim had to face three years of misery as a result of the terrible and barbaric nature of the crime.
The Senior Magistrate continued by stating that the young woman suffered female genital mutilation prior to marriage and afterwards underwent a caesarian section during childbirth, demonstrating the long-term physiological and physical effects of the terrible conduct.
She noted that the accused man shown no remorse after being informed of the seriousness of the conduct.
He insisted, though, that the young woman was his wife, whom he had wed three years before.
The magistrate emphasized as she read the sentence that she had taken into account the girl’s age, the fact that she was also pregnant, and the fact that the guy had been defiling the child for the previous three years.
She claimed that the verdict will deter potential offenders.
She gave Ololosereka two concurrent sentences of life in jail for the first offense of defilement and three years for the second count of early marriage.
Given the seriousness of the offense, state prosecutor Tito Wanga expressed pleased with the decision.
Accused person has 14 days to file an appeal.
