Residents of the Lavington neighborhood in Nairobi are at odds with a developer who is building a gas station there.
The construction of the gas station is opposed by the locals. They are requesting that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja cancel the building permit on the basis that the rules were not adhered to.
Since then, the locals have brought a lawsuit against the development.
Maina Ndirangu, the chairman of the Lavington Five Roads Union, asserts that the construction will negatively affect the local ecology.
The site of the petrol station, according to St. Austin’s School Principal Joseph Sambu, is likely to contaminate a school borehole.
The Nairobi County government is being held accountable by the locals for approving the building.
“I haven’t discovered a single instance of someone being approached and questioned about the NEMA procedure. We don’t know of any public participation in NEMA, but they have a NEMA license. How did it happen? Mr. Ndirangu posed.
We protest because there are boreholes nearby and the subterranean storage of that fuel is likely to harm our water, said Mr. Sambu.
