The Meru County Assembly has heard a petition from a Meru MCA calling for the removal of Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
The motion to remove Mwangaza was put out by Abogeta West MCA Dennis Kiogora, who also serves as the Minority Chief Whip, on the grounds that she had violated the Leadership and Integrity Act of Section 10 of the Constitution.
Governor Mwangaza has been charged by Mr. Kiogora of flagrant misconduct and misuse of power. He alleges she has committed a number of “discreditable activities” that have poisoned the environment and drawn scorn to the county.
According to a section of the petition, “The Governor has engaged in several discreditable activities that individually and collectively amount to flagrant violation of the Constitution, gross violation of various national and local laws, abuse of power, and gross misconduct.”
He continued, “The people of Meru County, the Assembly and its leadership, and the office of the Governor to, embarrassment, ridicule, and disrepute.”
According to Kiogora, Governor Mwangaza cannot be relied upon to cooperate with administrative personnel and elected officials at the national and county levels of government.
In addition, he stated that Mwangaza’s protracted tenure in office will harm countywide service delivery in the interests of the Meru voters.
The impeachment motion has been annexed by 68 MCAs.
In the background, a deadlock between Governor Mwangaza and the MCAs has been addressed during a consultative meeting to discuss their disagreements.
The MCAs left the Governor when she allegedly dismissed and disregarded their demands, which led to the impasse.
Later, they came to a peaceful resolution to focus on their constitutionally mandated oversight, legislative, and representational responsibilities.
