In an effort to improve sanitation in the informal settlements of the Capital, the Ministry of Water has commissioned sanitary blocks worth Ksh500 million in Nairobi’s Kibra constituency.
Speaking at Kibra at the commissioning event, water sector stakeholders from the French and Kenyan governments emphasized the importance of sanitation in evicting the antiquated flying toilet culture.
“I urge Kenyans to use such facilities whenever you have them with dignity; sometimes we build toilets but people don’t use them because of the culture.” Said Samwel Otieno, an official with the Ministry of Water.
The French Development Agency is funding the Athi Water Works Development Agency project, which is seeing the development of Bio Centers in the towns of Kibera, Kawangware, Mukuru, Korogocho, Huruma, and Mathare.
The CEO of Athi Water Works Agency, Eng. Thuita Mwangi, stated, “The impact and benefit obtained are beyond measure; we will be advocating for greater partnership.”
The French ambassador to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet, said, “You will make the best use of it. It is an interesting infrastructure for the community.
The initiative is being launched as the world observes Toilet Day, a day set aside to spur action on the sanitation crisis around the world.
