A 36-year-old man is in arrested after reportedly attacking a woman in Mbooni, Makueni County, robbing her of Ksh. 200, and then raping her.
The woman was reportedly waylaid on her way home from the market on Tuesday night by the suspect, Munyao Muoka, who then allegedly robbed her and physically assaulted her before fleeing, according to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday.
The victim claimed that she was on her way home from the market where she works at 10:30 p.m. when the man who approached her and demanded money attacked her, according to the DCI.
“When she started to hesitate, the man put a knife to her throat and took her Ksh. 200 in sales for the day. Before performing the abhorrent crime, he covered her lips with a leso that she was wearing.
According to DCI, the victim fled the scene of the crime while yelling for help, forcing bystanders to go in search of the offender.
The suspect was attacked by furious locals, but the police saved him and taken him and the woman to Kalawa Sub-county Hospital.
“Police officers based at Kalawa police station immediately rushed to the scene, rearrested the suspect, and escorted him and the victim to Kalawa Sub-county hospital, for necessary medical tests and treatment,” said DCI.
DCI said that the suspect had frightened the victim with a kitchen knife, which was later found and preserved as an exhibit at the murder scene.
