Machakos County leaders have chastised Trade, Investments, and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria for his comments on the eviction of squatters allegedly occupying East African Portland Cement Company property in Athi River.
The leaders, led by Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, have insisted that they will not be intimidated or expelled from the land.
On Wednesday at Lukenya, Kalonzo slammed CS Kuria, accusing him of interfering in the case and stating that the firm was trying to seize land that he claims belonged to the local community.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti reiterated Wiper’s sentiments, refuting Kuria’s claim that the people are squatters.
She claimed that the contested land is legally owned by the inhabitants and that the CS should stay out of it because it is an issue for local government now that the sector has been devolved by the Constitution since 2010.
“The land was devolved the last time I checked, Honourable Kuria, ilirudi kwako aje?” Wavinya posed.
They are now pleading with President William Ruto to intercede and assure the inmates’ safety.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, for one, has promised to oppose the eviction plan, saying he will seek that the CS visit the region so that he may be properly updated on the matter.
