Lamu: KDF vehicle drove over an IED, one person died and five injured.

On Friday, December 30, morning, a car carrying six soldiers struck an improvised explosive device (IED), leaving one soldier dead and five others injured.

Five soldiers were injured in the incident, according to a Kenya Defence Forces communiqué. Those who were seriously injured were flown to the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital, while others received treatment at the Manda Base Hospital and are now in stable condition.

The incident is said to have happened at 7:30 am as KDF troops were patrolling in the Lamu County neighborhood of Mlima Faru.

“The entire KDF fraternity condoles with the family of our lost hero and wishes a swift recovery to our injured warriors,” Brigadier Z. Kioko, Chief of Strategic Communications, said.

The Al-Shabaab militia, which has stepped up its attacks in Lamu during this festive season, is likely to have planted the IED.

Barely a week has passed since two other instances that resulted in four fatalities. Residents of Lamu are experiencing increased anxiety as the Al-Shabaab group continues to put the security system to the test, often with terrible consequences.
