On Monday, while the Azimio coalition was holding statewide anti-government protests in Kisumu’s Maseno neighborhood, police shot and killed a third-year student from Maseno University.
The deceased, William Mayange, was one of several students who joined the Azimio rallies, which later turned violent as the protestors attacked a supermarket in Maseno town, according to a police report on the incident.
The student, who had been wounded in the neck, was confirmed dead when he got to the Coptic hospital after being taken there.
According to police, the students defeated the security guards after they ran out of tear gas canisters.
Police claim that the student was wounded in the neck as a result of the officers using live ammunition to fend off the alleged attackers who had broken into the supermarket.
During the clashes, where the students had also set bonfires on fire and blocked the Kisumu-Busia route before they started throwing rocks at police, six police officers were also injured.
