Residents of Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, lynched a 28-year-old man after he fought with his girlfriend at the Mururi Trading Center.
Before he was attacked by enraged locals, Edward Maina is claimed to have stabbed Rachel Njeru, 24, more than seven times.
The two lovers were brought to Kerugoya Hospital, where they fought for their lives until the man died from his injuries.
Since this is not the first time the man has argued with another man while claiming to be his friend’s girlfriend, Joseph Wachira, a local, said: “We suspect the man thought the lady was having a love affair with another man.”
The residents claim that Maina was seen going around the residential building while brandishing two kitchen knives and threatening to kill someone.
“I said hello, but he was merely stating he would kill someone, so I went into my rented home in terror. I heard noise while watching the 9 o’clock news, so I called the police from the Mururi police station, according to a neighbor who went by the name of Joseph Kinyua.
Residents claimed that after unsuccessfully knocking on the door of the couple’s home, they broke in via the roof and saw the woman writhing in a pool of blood inside.
The man was beaten unconscious by the irate residents, who were difficult for police to free.
According to DCI Millicent Ochuka of Gichugu Sub-County, the patient is doing well.
