Kalonzo Musyoka, the head of the Wiper party, has cautioned President William Ruto against allegedly planning to interfere with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission in order to rig the 2027 General Election (IEBC).
Speaking on Monday in Kitui’s Kyome-Thaana ward, Kalonzo claimed that the ruling party’s attempt to remove the “Cherera four” IEBC commissioners was poorly timed and merely intended to obstruct the electoral body’s operations.
Juliana Cherera, vice chair of the IEBC, Irene Masit, Justus Nyang’aya, and Francis Wanderi are the four. President Ruto has since placed them on administrative leave, and a tribunal has been established to hear a petition to have them removed from office. But since then, Cherera and Nyang’aya have submitted their resignations.
The head of Wiper further reaffirmed that the Wednesday gathering at Kamukunji grounds was still going to take place as planned by the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party group, adding that they would not tolerate the President abusing his authority.
According to Kalonzo, Kenyans have the right to peacefully protest and are not required to obtain permission from any authorities in order to do so.
“We still intend to do this for this nation and will travel to Kamukunji on Wednesday. In essence, we are pleading with you not to rig the general election of 2027. Justice must be seen, and this is fundamental. In the case of Cherera and her colleague commissioners, justice must not only be done but also clearly shown to be done “said he.
Kalonzo’s comments follow Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio, who recently criticized President Ruto for suspending the “Cherera four” IEBC commissioners in order to supposedly dominate the commission in the long run to his advantage in the 2027 elections.
In an effort to sway the results of the upcoming election, Mr. Odinga further asserted that President Ruto’s administration wants to have sole discretion over the appointment of their selected commissioners.
The struggles of the commissioners are unrelated to the 2022 elections, as we have previously stated and will do so again. It has to do with the elections of 2027. In a news conference last week, Mr. Ruto declared his intention to rig the 2027 elections in 2022.
“The four are being forced out because William Ruto and the UDA administration want a clean slate at the IEBC and fill it with his stooges and henchman for the 2027 elections,” the statement reads.
