On Saturday, June 24, a trailer collided with a school bus at Kaburengu intersection on the Eldoret-Webuye highway, resulting in at least five children and the bus driver losing their lives.
According to a police report, the trailer driver lost control of the vehicle due to defective brakes and struck the school bus.
When the collision happened, both vehicles were headed toward Webuye in the same direction. The bus veered off the road and came to rest on its left side.
“It happened that an unknown driver who escaped from the scene was driving a motor vehicle make Mercedes Benz from Eldoret direction heading towards Webuye and upon reaching the location of the accident while descending, Chimoi lost control of the said vehicle and hit on the right side an Isuzu bus belonging to Ebenezer Academy in Busia carrying an unknown number of pupils. The bus landed on its left side off the road,” part of the report read.
The 48-year-old school bus driver was killed instantly, along with four girls and a boy, as a result of the incident.
While several pupils and staff members were taken to Webuye County Hospital, the trailer driver fled the scene.
“Scene visited and necessary action taken. The bodies of the deceased pupils were moved to Webuye County Hospital Mortuary pending identification and postmortem,” the police report read in part.
Police say they are working to capture the fled driver.
