Significant progress has been made in the case a week after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) took charge and launched a new investigation into Jeff Mwathi’s enigmatic slaying.
According to the homicide detectives in charge of the case, who spoke to Citizen TV, the 23-year-old interior designer was not killed by jumping from a building as had been previously reported.
Investigators from the DCI added that their findings, following scene reconstruction and forensic examination, show unmistakable evidence of a battle occurring inside the home of Mugithi artist Lawrence Njuguna, aka DJ Fatxo.
The police stated that there might have been a struggle before Mwathi was dragged outside and thrown from the apartment’s rooftop or stairs in the 12-story building.
Investigators suspect that Mwathi was murdered before being thrown off in order to conceal the crime and make it appear as though he committed suicide after ruling out suicide.
Earlier, it was said that Mwathi leaped out of the bedroom window, but that was later disproved because an adult cannot fit inside the window’s narrow frame.
According to a status report provided by the homicide detectives looking into Mwathi’s death on Friday morning, the investigation has so far involved interviewing the first group of potential witnesses, forensic examination of the scene, and retrieval of CCTV footages that show the deceased’s final moments.
The second phase of the inquiry, according to detectives, would involve questioning multiple people of interest and making pertinent suggestions to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The five people who were at DJ Fatxo’s home on the morning of February 22, 2023 when the incident occurred are among the persons of interest to be questioned in the following phase, according to the detectives.
According to DCI, the police officers who first handled the case should also be questioned.
In accordance with orders from Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki, the DCI homicide detectives took up the investigation last week from Kasarani Police Station.
