Maxine Wahome made history by becoming the first woman to win the WRC3 category in the just concluded WRC Safari Rally and the first one to win any support category of the WRC in 29 years since Isolde Holderied won the group N cup in Sanremo rally in 1994.
Reflecting on the milestone, Maxine says she was overwhelmed by emotions immediately after completing the Wolf Power stage in Hells gate.
“The feeling was so amazing; even when I was getting my interview I was completely speechless. I couldn’t believe that I had made it. I’m proud of myself and my team that helped me get the car ready. I’m completely happy and thankful to all you.”
Her exploits were rightfully applauded by President Uhuru Kenyatta who presided over the closing ceremony of the WRC Safari Rally at the Kenya Wildlife Training Institute in Naivasha.
“I want to congratulate our very own Maxine Wahome. You’ve proved that the world of motorsport is not the world of men but the world of human kind. We congratulate you as a winner of the WRC3,” Uhuru said.
Maxine now says her focus will turn to the Africa Rally Championship which she aims to win and secure a spot in the WRC.
“Next for me is focusing on the Africa Rally Championship in the Ford Fiesta. So that’s my next goal to see how far I can get and maybe win the Africa Rally Championship and get to the WRC.”
She encouraged more women to embrace motorsport saying she was the best example to all of them that indeed women can hack it in the motorsport.
“First of all I want to encourage more women to come out and join the sport. It’s not that hard, it’s not that dangerous. I have been in motorsport all my life I guess since I was 10 years old and its women empowerment all around the world, so I would want to encourage more women to come out and join the sport; we can all be called Toyota ladies, you know,” remarked Maxine as she seemed to put the all dominating manufacturer Toyota on notice of her achievements.
Maxine fought against all odds and triumphed in the WRC3 category of the just concluded WRC Safari Rally beating her Kenyan male counterparts McRae Kimathi and Jeremy Wahome.
