Abdulswamad Nassir, the governor of Mombasa, has spoken out in response to recent disagreements between the county government and a company about charitable work at public hospitals.
It all started last month when the county government ordered Mombasa Cement to stop supporting public hospitals through charitable endeavors.
Hasmukh Patel, the owner of the company, is said to have been shelling out millions each day to pay the bills for patients who got stuck at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital and other facilities.
The county executive, however, claims that the action is being taken to guarantee that there is order in such activities rather than to crack down on benefactors or aid.
“No one is that irrational as to refuse to assist someone. The government made the decision that everything involving the aid would be carried out in a systematic manner. Nobody said you couldn’t pay anyone’s bill, the governor of Nassir said in a statement to Citizen Digital on Wednesday night.
Nassir contended that hospitals had been collaborating with philanthropists without the county government’s involvement, which had led to uncertainty about how the county executive might effectively support the facilities.
The governor replied, “We thank you and even pray for your blessing if you wish to do that, but we cannot have a situation where 40 hospitals are writing to donors for x-ray machines and all these things, and the boss is not aware.
“There’s no denying it; we’ll have order and discipline, and I don’t see why anyone would object to that.”
His remarks came after the cement business declared it was moving the statues it had installed at several roundabouts along the coastal town to neighboring Kilifi County in what was perceived as retaliation for the county’s choice.
After years of neglect that had left the roundabouts in a terrible shape, the corporation took on the renovation in collaboration with the former governor Hassan Joho’s administration.
The Governor of Kilifi County, Gideon Mung’aro, is amenable to the concept of us transferring the statues, according to our discussions with him. The new alliance has us excited, a corporate spokesperson was reported as saying by the Daily Nation on Wednesday.
Nevertheless, the court last week blocked Mombasa Cement from assisting patients at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in paying their debts.
