A girl who took the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams at Osiri Primary School in Nyatike Sub County with 135 points has been saved from an early marriage.
The girl had been staying with a 40-year-old Ugandan man who was reportedly offering casual labor in the neighborhood, according to Mikeyo location chief David Oula.
According to Mr. Oula, the girl’s parents acknowledged giving their daughter away for marriage but insisted that because she is 22 years old and has a history of mental instability and took the KCPE exam in 2022, she is not a juvenile.
Before the girl was released, the area chief claimed that the girl’s mother had revealed that the Ugandan had recently given her Ksh. 3,000 as starter money for a business.
He claimed that their initial inquiry had revealed the Ugandan gold miner had been having a forced relationship with the girl since she was in class six, and in exchange, the girl’s family had been receiving financial support.
The girl said she had been longing to complete her studies in secondary school but her parents insisted she marry the man, according to the area head.
In response to repeated calls from the girl’s neighbors, who said she had been sobbing day and night asking with the Ugandan man to let her go back to her parents so she could resume her education, Mr. Oula said they came to the girl’s rescue.
The administrator stated that the police and Macalder police station have been given the matter. Mr. Oula expressed confidence that the girl will receive justice.
