Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) detained Benson Logiel Lokwang, a former member of the County Executive Committee of Turkana, in a day of drama that unfolded like an action thriller.
According to a statement from the commission, Lokwang was detained on Tuesday and will be charged with falsifying diploma and degree certificates.
According to reports, he was arrested at his residence in Lodwar Town, but as detectives were bringing him to the Lodwar Police Station, they came upon a rowdy gang of goons who forcibly released him.
But his freedom didn’t last long. He was re-arrested by detectives, who then transported him to Lodwar Central Police Station.
The police station where he was being kept was broken into by a mob, according to the EACC, who shouted for his release.
The Lodwar Law Courts ordered that he be held at the Central Police Station in Lodwar for arraignment before the Lodwar Anti-Corruption Magistrate after processing him, according to the EACC statement.
The crowd that had previously prevented his arrest from happening continued to stir up trouble on the court grounds in an effort to free him.
He will be charged on November 30th, a Wednesday.
According to the statement, the ex-CEC allegedly used false academic credentials to get the CEC job, which led the EACC to launch an investigation.
According to the commission, he claimed to hold a bachelor’s degree in both economics and sociology from Chuka University.
A bachelor’s degree in economics and sociology is not available at Chuka University.
The EACC further asserts that he fraudulently obtained a business administration degree purportedly from Premise Africa Development Institute.
The EACC asserts that despite his enrollment at the institute, there is no proof that he ever attended any classes or tests or turned up for them.
