Francis Atwoli, the secretary general of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), was chosen to serve as vice president of the International Trade Union Confederation for a fourth consecutive term (ITUC).
Atwoli was chosen for the position at the ongoing trade union organization’s 5th Congress in Melbourne, Australia. The organization has over 200 million members who come from 163 different countries.
More than 2000 delegates unanimously endorsed Atwoli’s nomination, establishing the framework for his four-year appointment to the ITUC, which has its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
“The role you’ve just given me this morning isn’t a simple one. You have given me the mission to stand up for working people everywhere in the world. Never will I fail you. Atwoli declared, “I will constantly defend your rights and give my life as a sacrifice for you.
He also informed the new General Secretary that COTU (Kenya) would help him in carrying out his agenda.
Atwoli was previously chosen, without opposition, to the ITUC’s Seven-Member Credentials Committee, which decides who is eligible to serve as a delegate to the confederation.
The Committee also provides information on the makeup of the different delegations for each nation as well as the scope of each delegation’s individual voting power.
In addition, Atwoli was elected to serve as a titular member of the ITUC General Council to represent the Eastern Africa Region after being recommended by a delegate from Tanzania and seconded by trade union leaders from a number of countries, including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, and Mauritius.
Luca Vasentini, an Italian, was chosen as the new Confederation’s general secretary at the fiercely disputed ITUC elections.
