John Menty was caught on CCTV footage using a knife to carry out the attacks in South Mumbai’s Parsi Bawdi area which is just a few meters away from Bombay High Court.
He likewise attempted to attack police officers who arrived at the scene but was easily subdued.
“The attacker, John (50), a Kenyan national, was arrested by Azad Maidan police the same day for the attack and the eight injured persons were admitted to a state-run hospital in south Mumbai,” a police official told the media.
“During the investigation conducted so far, it came light that the accused seems to have some mental health issues. He changed his versions and also spoke about God,” the official said.
Police have however ruled out the possibility that the attack was terror-linked after questioning people who personally know the suspect.
