Japheth Koome nominated as Inspector General of Police by Ruto.

President William Ruto has appointed Eng. Japheth Koome Nchebere as Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Mr. Koome is the current Commandant of the National Police Service College, Kiganjo, and a former Nairobi County Police Commander.

His nomination comes after outgoing Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, who is battling illness, chose to go on terminal leave before the end of his term.

President Ruto announced Mutyambai’s request for terminal leave while unveiling his Cabinet at State House on Tuesday.

“I have accepted that Mr. Mutyambai will proceed on terminal leave after discussing with him and taking into account his service to our nation and his health situation,” Ruto said.

Mutyambai’s contract as Inspector General of Police was up in six months.

After becoming ill in August, he was admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital’s High Dependence Unit.

He was transferred to the general ward a few weeks ago after his health improved.

Mutyambai was appointed Police Inspector General in April 2019 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
