Didmus Barasa: I Survived an Assassination Attempt

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has said that he survived an assassination attempt on the day he was accused of shooting dead his opponent’s aide in his constituency.

Speaking to the press on Friday after surrendering to the police, the MP said that his bodyguard was badly injured during the incident and is recovering in hospital.

“On Sunday night, my private bodyguard was attacked badly and was in a comma for three days and of the same night I survived an assassination attempt,” Barasa stated.

The MP, who successfully retained his seat, said that he was in Nairobi when he heard that the police were looking for him over the murder incident.

Barasa said that he was ready to co-operate with the police even as he said that he went to Nairobi to seek the court to give him an anticipatory bail.

“I went to Nairobi so that the court can give me anticipatory bail. But when I saw on TV or regional police commander asking me to surrender, I drove all the way from Nairobi ready to cooperate with the police,” Barasa stated.

The Kimilili MP-elect is accused of shooting his opponent Brian Khaemba’s bodyguard at Chebukwabi polling station where they were to witness the counting of votes.

The bodyguard, Brian Olunga, succumbed to the injuries after being rushed to the Kimilili sub-county hospital.
