Google Search Reveals Most Searched Topics About Kenyan General Election

Tech giant Google has unveiled fresh data documenting the most asked questions and trending searches in Kenya, in regards to the General Election next week, for the period between July 3 and August 1, 2022.

According to Google, some of the most asked questions by Kenyans in the period included:  ‘who will win 2022 election in Kenya’, when will campaign end for 2022 election’, ‘who is in charge of elections in a polling station in Kenya and ‘how long after the election is the president sworn in’, among others.

Queries that trended in the period included: ‘when is the Kenya election’, ‘when will the campaign end for the 2022 election’, ‘when are the elections in Kenya’ and ‘who is in charge of a polling station’, just to name a few.

Google also released data on the most trending presidential candidates in the country last month placing Agano Party candidate David Mwaure in the lead in the period under review.

Deputy President William Ruto, former premier Raila Odinga and Roots Party presidential candidate Prof. George Wajackoyah followed in that particular order.

In terms of the most searched candidate, DP Ruto came in first at 63 per cent followed by Odinga at 34 per cent. The frequency at which Wajackoyah and Mwaure’s names were searched stood at 2 per cent and 1 per cent respectively last month.

The significant interest in Mwaure also saw his Agano Party make gains in terms of search interest at 48 per cent followed by Roots Party at 39 per cent.

Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja Party and DP Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza factions search interests stood at 9 per cent and 4 per cent respectively.

Agano Party, Azimio, Kenya Kwanza and Roots Party, in that order, were the political parties that trended on Google in the period.

“This is a critical time in Kenya’s democracy and it’s great to see that people are collectively turning to Google Search to help them find answers to their biggest questions about the elections,” said Sharon Machira, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager.

She likewise revealed that Google will partner with Reuters to unveil a multi-lingual Live Elections Results One Box on Election Day that will post real time updates of the polls’ results, every five minutes, after they are announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Kenyans will receive notifications of the updated results on their devices.

In an effort to combat the circulation of hate speech and messages of incitement around the country, Google has also activated its Harassment Manager Tool which will allow users to identify toxic comments, block the hate speech circulators and hide insensitive replies.
