Azimio gubernatorial candidate for Bungoma county Zachariah Baraza on Saturday, July 30, survived an attack by unknown goons during his campaigns in Tongaren.

In images seen; Baraza, who is running on a United Democratic Party (UDP) ticket shared images of his cloths drenched in blood after sustaining head injuries.

He narrated how the youth who had allegedly been trailing him during his road tour decided to strike when he made a stop along Mujuyuni road.

“When I got to the spot, some of the women requested me to address them. Suddenly a grey pick-up truck full of youth overtook us and blocked the road.

“Young men alighted from the vehicle and began attacking my convoy. I knew they were after me because they had followed me to Tingaren,” he narrated.

Baraza was rushed to Kory Hospital where he received medical attention including the stitching of the wound at the back of his head.

He termed the attack as politically instigated, and blamed it on his opponents.

Politicians allied to the gubernatorial hopeful have called on the police to launch investigations into the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

Bungoma County is promising to a battleground for Raila Odinga’s Azimio and Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza during the August 9 polls.

With the county backing Raila in previous elections, a popularity poll showing that he was trailing Ruto in the county did not sit well with him.

He and Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa sharply criticized the residents over falling into the DP’s charm offensive in the region.

“The poll indicated that Ruto is at nearly 60 per cent while Raila is at 40 per cent. Shame on you people. I feel very slighted because these are my people,” he stated.

Bungoma’s pioneer governor Ken Lusaka who went on to become Senate Speaker is seeking to reclaim the seat on a UDA ticket.

Lusaka is battling it out with the incumbent Wycliffe Wangamati, who is defending the seat on DAP-party, of Wafula Wamunyinyi.
