The naked body of a one-day-old infant was on Thursday, July 28, found abandoned inside a sugarcane plantation in Makhonge village, Kakamega County.

The body of the infant; lying face down and naked, and partly eaten by dogs prowling the night, only told half the story of the torment it may have endured.

The shocking incident left the residents of the village cursing and wondering what would prompt a mother to commit such a despicable act on a child.

It is, however, not clear whether the infant had been left to die in the cold.

A picture seen by Wananchi Reporting showed part of the body missing, said to be eaten by dogs.

“This is a very shocking incident that we have witnessed in our village, and we condemn it as mothers,” said Makhonge village Elder Joan Wanyama.

The incident was also condemned by Pastor Aggrey Cheng’wali, also from the village, and who asked for speedy investigations.

“I would wish to ask the government to come in, carry investigations and arrest the culprit,” said Pastor Cheng’wali.

Police officers from Webuye arrived at the scene – and took the body to Webuye hospital mortuary.

It is not the first time a child has been found abandoned in the bush.

In June 2022, police in Siaya found a baby wrapped – and crying inside a maize plantation. The baby was rescued by Siaya Administration Police officer Sylvia Nyambura.

A similar incident happened in Kabarnet, Baringo County, were residents stumbled upon a foetus being fed on by a dog on February 10, 2022.
