Kirinyaga: Another Primary School Teacher Commits Suicide

Residents of Kirerema village in Kirinyaga County were on Monday, July 25, left in shock after a 45-year-old primary school teacher reportedly committed suicide.

According to Gichugu sub-county DCI Millicent Ochuka, the body of Anthony Chomba Njuki was found dangling from a tree inside a coffee plantation.

Reports indicate that Mr. Chomba committed suicide on a piece of land where another Neighbour, a Mr. David Njogu, also committed suicide a while back.

According to Chomba’s father, Mzee Julius Njuki, his son left his house at around 1 am – while his wife was deep asleep and never returned to the house.

His son was later found dangling by the neck a few metres from the home.

“My son was a teacher at Kiandai primary school, and was very jovial on Sunday. I’m wondering why my son killed himself,” wondered Mzee Njuki.

Adding: “I don’t know why he hanged himself, yet he was a good farmer and also an employee of the Teachers Service Commission.”

Detectives who visited the scene led by Ochuka said the deceased did not leave behind any suicide note.

“We have taken his body to Kibugi funeral home as we await postmortem,” noted officer Ochuka said.

Mr. Chomba is the second teacher to commit suicide in Kirinyaga this month.

On July 7, 2022 the body of a teacher from Wakaniu primary school in Mwea was found inside a well at Kandongu village in Mwea. Detectives recovered a suicide note from the house of 56-year-old Nancy Wangithi Karuria.

Madam Nancy’s body was found floating inside the well by a resident.

Residents of Kirinyaga have raised concerns over rising cases of suicide in the region.
