A matatu driver who caused the death of a senior police officer’s daughter was on Thursday sentenced to a three-year imprisonment.

The accused, Partick Macharia Magu, caused the death of Meline Waithera, Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua’s daughter.

Magu was also given an alternative fine of Ksh.200,000 and his driving licence suspended for a period of one year.

The court heard that he reversed the vehicle without any regard to other road users, leading to the deceased being sandwiched between another vehicle.

Trial magistrate Esther Kimilu, while sentencing the accused, said the vehicle was unroadworthy; she however added that, after causing the said accident, Magu surrendered to the police.

According to the magistrate, the driver was remorseful and admitted that he reversed without due care.
