A passenger is reported to have died and several others injured following an accident that occurred on Thursday morning, July 7, involving a 14 seater matatu.
The accident occurred along the busy Embu Meru highway, just a few metres from Thuci river bridge.
According to witnesses, the matatu was headed towards Meru from Nairobi when it lost control before landing in a ditch.
Chris Mwenda, a boda boda rider who witnessed the accident, said he heard a loud bang before the vehicle lost control.
“It was possibly a tyre burst, then I heard screams and cries from passengers as the vehicle left the road. I rushed to the scene together with others to help free trapped passengers,” said Mwenda.
Adding: “The injured were rushed to Kyeni hospital in Runyenjes, and others taken to Chuka Level 5 hospital with the help of Tharaka Nithi emergency rescue team.”
Another witness, Dennis Mugendi, a trader at Kathageri market, said he rushed to the scene of the accident and found many passengers injured, some of them bleeding.
“Almost everybody in the vehicle was injured, but there is this one woman we fear might have lost her life, but we pray that she recovers,” said Mugendi.
The matatu wreckage has since been recovered from the scene as Runyenjes traffic police commence investigations into the accident.
