A police officer is being treated in a Nairobi hospital after being injured in a brawl between two bartenders on Saturday night.
After finishing his shift, the officer from the Kware police station in Embakasi is said to have gone to the Villa police station canteen for a few drinks.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the officer was approached by Lucy Mueni, a bartender, who engaged him in conversation while imbibing a couple of drinks.
“Mueni appeared to have been smitten by the recently graduated officer as, she would sit next to him giggling in excitement, whenever she was not serving the rest of the patrons,” DCI wrote.
However, Mueni’s colleague, Favian Nekesa, was also drawn to the cop “with an athletic physique and a neatly trimmed moustache’, according to a police report.
“Unable to take any more of their shenanigans, Nekesa left the counter flying and launched a barrage of blows and kicks at the hapless Mueni who was sent tumbling on the floor injuring her head and hands,” said DCI.
The officer was met with flying projectiles from Nekesa before he could fully comprehend what had happened to his merry-making night, as the altercation escalated into a full-fledged commotion, attracting other police officers on patrol to the bar.
The two were then escorted to a nearby Mukuru health center for medical treatment before being released to return home.
The officer was however rushed to the hospital after his condition deteriorated, where he is nursing wounds and is in stable condition.
Meanwhile a probe has been launched to ascertain the cause of the incident.
