In Kiambu County’s Ruiru Town, a five-storey building has collapsed.
When fissures were noticed in the building’s pillars on Sunday afternoon, more than 100 occupants were forced to leave. Hours later, the structure fell.
Following complaints of the risk from the National Construction Authority (NCA) and the Ruiru OCPD, the rescue efforts were spearheaded on Sunday by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and firefighters.
“The columns that are intended to support this house have cracked, thus tenants are no longer able to occupy it. It won’t last very long. Wamatangi, who was in charge of the rescue efforts on Sunday, warned that it may already be falling if not for the neighboring house that is sustaining it.
Within a week, Kiambu has experienced two building collapses, including this one. In Ruaka, Kiambu County, another five-story building collapsed on November 17.
Two occupants were killed when a nearby house was struck by a falling building.
