A house help with roots in Nairobi’s Huruma estate was on Wednesday charged in court for allegedly stealing around Ksh.400,000 in foreign currencies from her employer’s house in Parklands.
The suspect, Violet Mukari Makotsi, was arraigned before Kibera Law Courts Chief Magistrate Anne Mwangi.
The court heard that Ms. Makotsi reportedly stole USD2,500, UAE Dirham 2,500 and 200 Sterling Pounds (approximately Ksh. 400K in total) from Assad Ahmed Hassan on May 31, 2022, when he and his family went out for shopping.
She is likewise facing a charge of handling stolen property after detectives based at Parklands Police Station stormed her house in Huruma and recovered Ksh.30,000 in cash and Ksh.46,000 in her mobile wallet, which is suspected to have been part of the loot.
Detectives started trailing the suspect after Hassan lodged a complaint at the said police station when he returned home to find the cash, which was hidden in a bag and stashed away in one of the house’s rooms, gone and the house help missing.
Ms. Makotsi was tending to Hassan’s infant child at the time, whom she left behind before absconding.
The suspect denied all charges before the court and was released on a surety bond of Ksh.300,000.
The case will be mentioned on June 27, 2022, where pre-trial and hearing dates will be set.
