The Doctors are examining some of the latest celebrity beauty trends and weighing in on if they are hacks or whacks!
The first comes from Julianne Hough who reportedly says she brushes with turmeric to whiten her teeth. The Doctors reach out to dentist Dr. Sako Karakozian to get the scoop on this.
Dr. Sako is familiar with this trend where people either brush directly with turmeric or mix it into a paste using baking soda. He says that it will work in the short-term because the spice is abrasive and removes the top layer of enamel. In the long-term, this is bad for your teeth! Not to mention, turmeric will stain your toothbrush and everything else in your house.
The Doctors say to keep using this spice to cook because turmeric is full of antioxidants and may boost immunity. Keep it out of the bathroom!
The next hack comes from Kim Kardashian who says she crushed up acidic Vitamin C tablets, added them to her shampoo, let it sit for 20 minutes, and then rinsed It out to reveal a much lighter shade.
Surprisingly, Dermatologist Dr. Sonia Batra says this actually works! The Vitamin C is ascorbic acid, which when used this way, is going to open up the hair cuticles and strip it of some of the dye. She notes that this only works on dyed hair, not regular.
Psychiatrist Dr. Ish Major asks how often is too much or should people not do it at all?
Dr. Batra says anything you do to color your hair is going to damage it on some level. She advises doing it sparingly and as least often as possible. She says if you’re going to try this, don’t do it more than once a month, based on the rate that hair grows out.
OB/GYN Dr. Nita points out that this is actually not as harsh as dying your hair and Dr. Batra agrees. She says it’s less damaging than hydrogen peroxide, which would be the other option to remove the dye.
